ISRO Vyom Mitra to send first female humanoid robot in space
Meet ‘Vyomitra’, a robot woman going into space from India ISRO's robot which will travel to space
ISRO seems fully prepared for its ambitious Gaganyaan mission. ISRO is to launch India’s first manned spacecraft ‘Gaganyaan’ in December 2021, before ISRO will launch two unmanned missions in December 2020 and June 2021. In a similar mission ‘Vyomitra’ will be sent to space.
Vyomitra is being described as a half-humanoid by ISRO. In simple words, she is such a robot who can talk to you, can understand and record your words to some extent. It also has the ability to recognize people. In the spacecraft, ‘Vyomitra’ will take the command of ISRO scientists and conduct some experiments as well. On 22 January, ISRO has shown the first glimpse of ‘Vyomitra’.
What does Vyommitra mean?
Vyommitra, a combination of two Sanskrit words Vyoma (Space) and Mitra (Friend), took everyone by surprise when she introduced herself to the audience.
"Hello everyone. I am Vyommitra, the prototype of the half-humanoid, been made for the first unmanned Gaganyaan mission," the robot said.

Sivan said ahead of the launch of India's maiden human spaceflight venture 'Gaganyaan' in December 2021, ISRO will undertake two unmanned missions in December 2020 and June 2021 and 'Vyommitra' will fly in them.
"We are on schedule (regarding Gaganyaan). We are going to do lots of demonstration tests this year. This year end we will send our unmanned mission and the half-humanoid you have seen today is going to fly in it," he said.

India plans to send three people to space as part of Mission Gaganyaan.
The Indian Space Research Organisation's mission is significant as it would make India one of the four countries in the world after Russia, US, and China to launch a manned space flight.
Last week, ISRO chief K Sivan said that four astronauts have been identified for training that will begin in the third week of January in Russia.
Vyom Mitra was the centre of attraction at the inaugural session of the "Human Spaceflight and Exploration - Present Challenges and Future Trends" seminar on Wednesday in Bengaluru, news agency PTI reported.
"Hello everyone. I am Vyom Mitra, the prototype of the half-humanoid, been made for the first unmanned Gaganyaan mission," the robot said while introducing itself.
Monitoring module parameters, alerting astronauts and performing life support operations are among many functions it is capable of performing.
ISRO chief K Sivan said Vyom Mitra will simulate human functions.
"It will be simulating exactly the human functions there (in space). It will check whether the system is right. This will be very useful to simulate, as if a human is flying," he was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.
ISRO will send two unmanned missions before the Ganganyaan mission. It will monitor how the human system will behave in the environment control life support system.
Four Indian Air Force pilots have been shortlisted for the manned mission. They are currently undergoing an 11-month training programme in Russia.
